This week two of my classes learned about Kandinsky and began a tissue paper collage. We first read The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock. This is a great book that explains how Kandinsky found his way to abstract art. It is thought he had a genetic disorder that caused him to actually see colors when he heard music. With that idea in mind, we listened to jazz/classical music while we worked.
We started our collage by tearing pieces of tissue paper and using watered down glue to create a background. We then used small torn shapes to create flowers. Working this way allowed students to loosen up and be less literal than they would be when drawing. Next week, we will be adding line to these loose flowers. I think these are beautiful as they are, so I wanted to share. Next week, I will post the finished pieces.
