We had so much fun doing a horse themed art party for Lucy’s birthday today. The girls did such a great job, and each created their own unique horses with such personality. Wonderful work, ladies!

Landscapes in the style of Van Gogh
The older classes started this session by painting landscapes in the style of Vincent van Gogh. I brought in several examples of van Gogh’s landscapes. Students each chose a landscape to use for inspiration. We mixed tempera paint with wheat paste to thicken it. Starting with just a few guide lines drawn in oil pastel, […]
Petunia Paintings
The new session got off to a great start this week. We started by reading Petunia by Roger Duvoisin. This is a classic story written in 1950 about a goose who finds a book and believes it has given her wisdom. This “wisdom” causes her to be proud and gets her and her animal friends […]
Portraits with Hats
For the last project of the session, I needed a project we could all finish in one hour. This project fit the bill and gave us some practice on facial proportions, color mixing, and painting techniques. We began by reading Do You Have a Hat? by Eileen Spinelli, Illustrated by Geraldo Valerio. It is a […]
Painted Paper
After a long winter break, we are back to work at Corbie Arts. Our first project is actually going to be several “mini lessons” that will culminate in a winter collage. We began by reading Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner, illlustrated by Christopher Silas Neal. In this book, we follow a young girl […]
Penguins!
Today my K-2nd grade class drew and painted these precious penguins. This seemed a fitting subject for this cold icy day. We started out by discussing how to draw penguins using lightly drawn circles and ovals to create the shape and then connecting those shapes to form the penguin’s body. We looked at how changing […]
Fall Still Life Complete
Last week was the final class of this session. Everyone completed their fall still life. I am so glad I kept their projects one more week. Even just 20 more minutes of work made such a difference in the finished pieces. I was worried that some students would not want to work on their projects […]
Autumn Still Life
I try to do one still life project each session. My goal is to at least introduce students to the idea of drawing what they see, not what they know is there. This is the first step to moving away from drawing symbols for objects. Drawing is really about seeing and allowing our eyes and […]
Apple Paintings Complete
Last week we put the finishing touches on our Matisse apples. Each student was given charcoal and white chalk pastel. We talked about the location of the light source for our still life and how that would affect our shading and highlights. The shading gave their apples three dimensional form. They also learned about charcoal, […]
Mona Lisa Portraits
On our last day of “Modern Masters” we painted our own version of Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa. We first read “William and the Missing Masterpiece” by Helen Hancocks. It is a funny mystery where the lead character, William, is an international investigator who is called in to solve the crime of the missing Mona Cheesa. […]
