This was the first project for our Mexican Art workshop this summer. I knew this was going to be fun, bright, and cheery. But, I had no idea how absolutely stunning these would turn out! We started out by using sponges and tempera paint to create painted paper for our vases. Then we painted a […]

Self Portraits
We spent the last two weeks in class working on self portraits. I purchased self standing mirrors so that each student could observe themselves while drawing. This was the first time we have used mirrors to do self portraits. I could really see the difference. We drew our portraits in black crayon and then painted […]
Franz Marc’s Blue Horse
For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the German artist, Franz Marc. We looked at several of Marc’s famous blue horses and read the book, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle. Carle uses painted paper in his illustrations, so we began this project by creating our own […]
Paul Klee’s Senecio
I forgot to post these last week. My apologies! Last week, we learned about Paul Klee and his painting, Senecio (1922). We first painted our backgrounds with tempera paint, using a mat board scrap to apply the paint. While those were drying, we drew “Senecio” on yellow-gold paper using oil pastel and added color with […]
Chinese Vases with Flowers
I love how these Chinese Vases turned out! There was a lot of skills packed into this short project. We started out by looking at pictures of Chinese vases for inspiration and talking about symmetry and pattern. Students drew their vase shape, cut it out and painted a pattern of their choice in blue watercolor. […]
Cat Collages
This week my K-2nd grade group finished their cat collages. We began this project by reading Cat Tale by Michael Hall. This book uses homonyms and homophones to create fun adventures for a group of three cats. I’m not sure this group grasped all the grammar, but it was a fun book anyway. : ) […]
More Snowy Owls!
I love this group of owls! We started painting realistic snowy owls last week. However, this week, I shared pictures of exotic owls with bright colors. I let them choose whether to complete their owls in realistic colors or let the exotic owl inspire bright colors. I love all the variety!
K-2 Snowy Owls
Oh my goodness! These snowy owls are so cute! This was a really challenging project for my K-2 group. We did the snowy background first and then painted the owls on the still wet papers. Some followed me doing a directed drawing on the white board, and a few brave souls drew from photographs. Because […]
Giraffes!
Over the last few snowy/icy weeks, my 3rd-5th grade groups painted these amazing giraffes. Students drew from photographs of giraffes. I am trying to wean this group from directed drawing. There is a lot of groaning when they hear they have to draw on their own, but they almost always surprise themselves. We drew these […]
Birds on a Wire
I recently came across Patty Baker‘s beautiful paintings on Pinterest. I loved her painting of a sunset with birds in silhouette. I thought the telephone poles going off in the distance would be a great opportunity to teach my older class about spacing in one point perspective. We started by painting a sunset with tempera paint. I […]
