Our first project of the school year was based on John James Audubon. We began by reading The Boy Who Drew Birds. This book tells the story of John James Audubon and his fascination with birds. I found a great coloring book with line drawings of Audubon’s bird paintings. The line drawings in the coloring […]

Chuck Close Inspired Portraits
I knew this project would take some time, but the recent snowy weather didn’t help. After working on them for one last class, I decided to send them home. Even unfinished, though, I think they turned out great. They came up with some great patterns in their squares.
Chuck Close Grid Portraits
I haven’t posted about my 6th grade and up class in a while. They have been working hard on their Chuck Close grid portraits. This project takes a lot of time but provides a lot of learning value. We first read about Chuck Close and looked at his work. I had taken pictures of each […]
Portraits of Stravinsky Complete
My 6th grade and up class completed their Stravinsky portraits. I let them add color using a variety of water based materials (watercolor pencils, ink pencils, gel crayons, etc… I really think they turned out great. They each have such unique personalities.
Portrait of Igor Stravinsky by Picasso
I am having so much fun with my older class. I really want to help them take their drawing skills to the next level. I am incorporating exercises from Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. One exercise from the book is to copy Picasso’s portrait of Igor Stravinsky, upside down. […]
Sky Scraper 3-D Drawings
So, with a few early finishers and most of the students still working on their rainforest collages, I needed an easy to set up project that wouldn’t interfere with the collage work. This project was perfect and taught about drawing buildings in 3-D. I first passed out an inspiration sheet with pictures of famous sky […]
Rain Forest Animals
This week we focused on drawing the animals for our rain forest collage. They turned out so great! I created a worksheet to help them draw some of the animals. Some students went a step further, drawing animals and even natives from their imaginations. Can’t wait to see these in their collages next week.
Drawing Forest Animals
This week we painted a winter landscape which will be the background for our collage next week. We also drew forest animals to populate our winter scenes. Before we began our final drawings, I had students do a drawing exercise. I passed out reference pictures of the type of animals found in a winter forest […]
Hot Air Balloon Drawings
This week, my K-2nd grade classes are drawing hot air balloons. We first read “Sebastian and the Balloon” by Philip Stead. The balloon in this book is made of quilts, which was a great introduction to our project. After drawing a simple hot air balloon, we filled each section of our balloons with pattern. Next […]
Drawing from Imagination
Many of my 3rd-5th graders love to draw from their imaginations. I found a project that used the folk artist, Horace Pippin, for inspiration. Horace Pippin was an African American folk artist. He was self taught and painted the world around him, memories, stories, etc… We first read the book, A Splash of Red: The […]
