Today in “Crawl, Wiggle, Fly,” we made butterfly collages. Yesterday, we made some painted paper in warm and cool colors. We used those papers today to create beautiful butterflies. Thanks to Patty at Deep Space Sparkle for the inspiration. : )

Lovely Tissue Paper Flowers
What a busy day we had in the K-2nd class! We completed our tissue paper collages, adding a fine black line and Modge Podge. I challenged them to really take it slow on the line work and to not worry about staying on the lines. I was so impressed with their delicate line work. Well […]
Tissue Paper Collages in Progress
This week two of my classes learned about Kandinsky and began a tissue paper collage. We first read The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock. This is a great book that explains how Kandinsky found his way to abstract art. It is thought he had a genetic disorder that caused him to actually see […]
Exotic Birds in Cherry Blossom Trees
Thursday’s K-2nd grade class finished their bird collages. They really created some wonderfully exotic birds. They added some great detail and really gave a lot of thought to the placement of each bird in their trees. They finished pieces are just wonderful!
Sweet Birdie Collages
I knew students would be finishing their projects at different times this week. Some would need a short project to fill the hour. Fellow art teacher, Carol Cormier, shared this project. I knew it would be just perfect! Students first drew a tree with some leaves, then cut shapes from various papers. They glued these […]
Celebrating Spring
The last two weeks, we have been working on a painting/collage of birds in cherry blossom trees. I loved that this project taught skills, like applying a graded wash with watercolor, while allowing for a lot of creativity. We started by painting a bright sunset in watercolor. Then, we created “blob” birds on a separate […]

The final touch was spraying yellow and blue liquid watercolor. This project was inspired by Denise Logan’s book, Dynamic Art Projects for Children. These were […]
