When I was about 14, inspired by a travel ad for Russia, I did a painting of buildings similar to St Basil’s Cathedral. I came across it recently and thought it would be fun for my classes to do.
We started out discussing St Basil’s Cathedral, its location in Moscow, and a little history. Then we drew our own version of the cathedral. I had several reference pictures available for inspiration. Then we went over some lines with crayon and painted with liquid watercolor. Some of the older students really got into drawing elaborate details and have not yet started the painting. I’m looking forward to seeing those finished next week. Some of the students finished this week. They are so fresh and vibrant. I love the detailed drawings and all the bright colors!
My original used oil pastel and watercolor only. A tip from Patty at DSS to use both Sharpie and crayon helped make this project really successful.
