I don’t usually don’t do a “back to school” project, but this Splat the Cat project was hard to resist. I have several new students in my K-2nd grade class, and I wanted to put their minds at ease with a funny book and a no fail project.
We first read the book, Splat the Cat. Splat is a sweet, fuzzy cat who is nervous about his first day of school. He decides to pack his friend, Seymour (a mouse) in his lunch box. When Splat’s new friends discover Seymour, they try to make a snack of him. A chase ensues, but somehow Seymour is able to turn the situation around and even saves the day. This cute story with great illustrations provided lots of giggles. : )
We painted our Splats with black tempera paint. While those dried, we made items for Splat to carry to school or wherever students decided Splat would go. They really got creative. Some Splats will be parachuting, some heading to the beach, some are old with beehive hair! : D And of course our story’s hero, Seymour showed up several times. We didn’t quite finish these, but I thought I’d give you a sneak peek. We had a great first day. I am excited to see what these enthusiastic, young artists will create this year.
Thank you, Patty at DSS for the project idea. : )
