Our theme this week was Picasso’s Blue Period. For the 3rd-5th grade classes, we did blue portraits, exploring tints and shades of one blue color. I went over proportions of a face but let them decide who the portrait would be of, themselves or an invented character. They also got to decide the location of the portrait. We ended up with a wide variety of characters and self portraits. They were really challenged in creating a wide variety of tints and shades from one color. It really forced them to think about value instead of color.
