This week, students learned about Wassily Kandinsky, Russian artist known for his vibrant abstract paintings. We read the book The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock. This book tells about Kandisnsky’s childhood and explains synesthesia. Kandisnky was thought to have synesthesia. He heard sounds when he saw colors and saw colors when he heard sounds. This condition is thought to have influenced his abstract style of painting.
My K-2nd grade group did their own version of Kandinsky’s painting: Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles. This project appears to be much easier than it is. Choosing colors and equally distributed around the composition and controlling the watercolor kept students engaged and challenged. They also got to appreciate the pure beauty of color.
