Our second day of Underwater Adventures was jelly fish day. Our 2-D project was a mixed media painting. We started with a gradient background in either blue-ish or pink-ish tempera paint. Our goal was to learn how to blend smoothly, moving from one color to the next without a hard line. While our backgrounds were drying, we assembled our 3-D jellyfish. I was both nervous and excited about these. They were a little tricky but turned out great! The plastic parts were painted with a tinted glitter glaze. We tore the plastic sheeting to make the “arms” look ruffled like real jelly fish. Iridescent film made the stomach and Brite-lace was used for the tentacles. We attached monofilament thread so students could hang them up.
While the glue was drying on our 3-D jellies, we went back to work on our mixed media project. Using chalk pastel, students drew and colored jelly fish. We talked about limiting colors for each jelly and using white to show a light source. After that we drew seaweed with black oil pastel. The final touch was a splattering of white paint for air bubbles. I can’t believe how well these turned out! I tried to get pictures of all them, but it looks like I missed a couple. They were all amazing.
Thank you to Patty at DSS for the idea. : )
