Our last project in the World Traveler workshop came from Malawi. Children in Malawi create push toys called “Galimotos” from wire scraps. We first read the book Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams. This book tells the story of a little boy named Kondi who searches for scrap wire in his village and eventually builds his own galimoto.
We pre made a wire base and provided wooden dowels and plastic “wheels” (Vitamin Water tops with holes drilled in them). Students assembled the pre made parts and then created their cars from pipe cleaners. I didn’t show an example this time but let the kids figure out how to make their car. They had a blast with this! I think it was worth drinking all that Vitamin Water. : D
