For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the German artist, Franz Marc. We looked at several of Marc’s famous blue horses and read the book, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle. Carle uses painted paper in his illustrations, so we began this project by creating our own blue painted paper. While those dried, we drew out our landscapes and painted them in bright, vibrant colors. I demonstrated how to blend colors together to create a gradual transition from one color to another.
The next week we finished up our landscapes and drew our horses on the blue painted paper. Horses are pretty complicated to draw. I was really impressed with how well everyone did. After cutting out the horses, we added final details with black crayon and glued them down.
I really love how these turned out. All my students, ages 5-11 successfully completed this project. They were all so wonderful, it was hard to choose which ones to share. : )
