For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the German artist, Franz Marc. We looked at several of Marc’s famous blue horses and read the book, The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle. Carle uses painted paper in his illustrations, so we began this project by creating our own […]

Peacocks
I have tried this project at home using different mediums and was never quite happy with it. I finally decided to try it with liquid watercolor and oil pastels and knew this was going to be a winner. Controlling liquid watercolor with all the details was a challenge, but the oil pastel really helped. We […]
Paul Klee’s Senecio
I forgot to post these last week. My apologies! Last week, we learned about Paul Klee and his painting, Senecio (1922). We first painted our backgrounds with tempera paint, using a mat board scrap to apply the paint. While those were drying, we drew “Senecio” on yellow-gold paper using oil pastel and added color with […]
Watercolor Resist Birds
My busy K-2nd grade group did these watercolor resist birds today. We used oil pastels to draw the birds and add pattern. Then we painted the birds with liquid watercolor. This was a sweet ending to our five week session.
Klee Cats
My K-2nd grade group finished their Paul Klee Cats today. These have so much character! We drew our cats with oil pastel on brown paper and colored them with chalk pastel. I think this is one of the only projects I have repeated. It is so simple and turns out so great!
Elmer the Elephant
These sweet elephants were worth the wait. We started these last week after reading Elmer. After their drawing was complete, students filled in their elephant with a pattern of their choice. I love some of the original designs they came up with! They added color with markers, cut them out and glued them on black paper. […]
Chinese Vases with Flowers
I love how these Chinese Vases turned out! There was a lot of skills packed into this short project. We started out by looking at pictures of Chinese vases for inspiration and talking about symmetry and pattern. Students drew their vase shape, cut it out and painted a pattern of their choice in blue watercolor. […]
No, David!
Several classes just finished a project based on David Shannon’s “David” books. David is always getting in trouble. My goal was for students to show action and emotion in their drawings. They certainly accomplished that! We used illustrations from Shannon’s books for inspiration. Students were encouraged to add their own details or other characters to […]
Cat Collages
This week my K-2nd grade group finished their cat collages. We began this project by reading Cat Tale by Michael Hall. This book uses homonyms and homophones to create fun adventures for a group of three cats. I’m not sure this group grasped all the grammar, but it was a fun book anyway. : ) […]
Musical Collages
After learning about Wassily Kandinsky, we drew musical instruments both from photographs and some from imagination. Students were encouraged to draw the instruments large, keeping the arrangement of their composition in mind. We then added color with oil pastels. We discussed limiting our color palettes and repeating colors to unify our pieces. In the last […]
