We had so much fun doing a horse themed art party for Lucy’s birthday today. The girls did such a great job, and each created their own unique horses with such personality. Wonderful work, ladies!

Rain Forest Animals
This week we focused on drawing the animals for our rain forest collage. They turned out so great! I created a worksheet to help them draw some of the animals. Some students went a step further, drawing animals and even natives from their imaginations. Can’t wait to see these in their collages next week.
Finished Memories and Oil Resist Flowers
This week we finished our Favorite Memory paintings. They included so many details to really make their story clear. After painting with watercolor, we used an extra fine tip Sharpie to bring out the details. They all turned out wonderful. Unfortunately, I was so involved in class on some days, I forgot to take pictures! […]
My Favorite Memory
This week we drew from our imaginations, depicting our favorite memories. Some students love to draw from their imaginations and some really struggle. I do think it is a good exercise and gave us an opportunity to discuss planning our compositions and doing thumbnails to plan our page. I have to say, I really enjoyed […]
Completed Symmetrical Insects
The older class completed their symmetrical insects this week. I missed getting pictures of several of them. : ( They all turned out great. Most kids in this age group really love details. This project gave them lots of opportunity to draw details! They came up with some very good looking specimens.
Fabulous Frogs
This week students created these fabulous frogs with chalk pastel. I recently found a beautiful frog calendar and knew it would make a great art project. The frogs had such great shapes and colors. I also wanted to give students an opportunity to draw from a photograph. I laminated the photographs in the calendar so […]
More Symmetrical Insects
The older classes are doing a more complicated version of symmetrical insects. They chose an insect or parts of an insect from a worksheet. They then drew half of the bug on one side of their paper. I had pre-measured and marked the center of their paper. After one side was drawn, they traced their […]
Symmetrical Insects
Both classes this week are learning about symmetry. Insects are great subjects to tie in with symmetry. Most are symmetrical. Some are beautiful. Some are scary. There’s something for everyone. In the younger class, we began by reading The Bugliest Bug, by Carol Diggory Shields. It tells the story of some sneaky arachnids that disguise […]
Landscapes in the style of Van Gogh
The older classes started this session by painting landscapes in the style of Vincent van Gogh. I brought in several examples of van Gogh’s landscapes. Students each chose a landscape to use for inspiration. We mixed tempera paint with wheat paste to thicken it. Starting with just a few guide lines drawn in oil pastel, […]
Petunia Paintings
The new session got off to a great start this week. We started by reading Petunia by Roger Duvoisin. This is a classic story written in 1950 about a goose who finds a book and believes it has given her wisdom. This “wisdom” causes her to be proud and gets her and her animal friends […]
