For our last day of Underwater Adventures we started out by reading A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. Hermit realizes he has outgrown his shell, finds a new one but decides it needs some decoration. He sets out to decorate his new home and makes several friends along the way. Very cute story […]

Jelly Fish Day
Our second day of Underwater Adventures was jelly fish day. Our 2-D project was a mixed media painting. We started with a gradient background in either blue-ish or pink-ish tempera paint. Our goal was to learn how to blend smoothly, moving from one color to the next without a hard line. While our backgrounds were […]
Jacques Cousteau
Today we read The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau , by Dan Yaccarino. Then we did an underwater collage. We started by drawing a scuba diver and painting him using tempera paint. Then we drew underwater animal and plant life with Sharpies and colored them with chalk pastels. We then used the chalk pastel […]
Tutankhamen Portraits
Our last 2-D project of the Walk Like an Egyptian workshop was a portrait of Tutankhamen, aka King Tut. We read Tutankhamen’s Gift by Robert Sabuda. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Tutankhamen’s childhood and how he became a Pharaoh. A portrait project provided an opportunity to discuss facial proportions, where do the […]
Cartouche Shrinky Dink Necklaces!
I remember when Shrinky Dinks were new and the coolest thing ever. I remember the first time I saw my hand colored Shrinky Dinks shrink in the oven. It was magical! Apparently, these have gone out of style because this was new to most of my students and some of the parents. Yes, I did […]
Canopic Jars
Yesterday, we learned about the burial practices of ancient Egypt. In particular, we learned about canopic jars. These jars were used to store the organs of the deceased for safe keeping on the voyage to the afterlife. There were four different types of jars (jackal, baboon, human, and falcon), each bearing a likeness of the […]
Egyptian Landscape Collages
There are a lot of skills packed in to this fun project! We started with textured painted paper, which later would be sandy hills. Then we painted a colorful sunset sky. Clouds were added to the sky after a discussion about objects receding in space, how objects close to us appear larger and get smaller […]
Fred Babb Inspired Art Posters
For our last class of the year, I wanted to do something loose and fun. I’ve been wanting to do this one for awhile. Fred Babb was an artist from California. I purchased a book of his posters and placed some of them on the board. They are all bright and loose portraits and feature […]
Sky Scraper 3-D Drawings
So, with a few early finishers and most of the students still working on their rainforest collages, I needed an easy to set up project that wouldn’t interfere with the collage work. This project was perfect and taught about drawing buildings in 3-D. I first passed out an inspiration sheet with pictures of famous sky […]
Rainforest Collages Complete!
Yeah! We finished our rainforest collages this week! I love the richness of color and detail. Everyone worked so hard on these and should be very proud of the finished works. I would love to see them all hung together. They each seem to tell a different story of adventure in the jungle. : )
