Today we read The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau , by Dan Yaccarino. Then we did an underwater collage. We started by drawing a scuba diver and painting him using tempera paint. Then we drew underwater animal and plant life with Sharpies and colored them with chalk pastels. We then used the chalk pastel […]

Rainforest Collages Complete!
Yeah! We finished our rainforest collages this week! I love the richness of color and detail. Everyone worked so hard on these and should be very proud of the finished works. I would love to see them all hung together. They each seem to tell a different story of adventure in the jungle. : )
Bird Collage
Since we already had beautiful painted papers and scissors and glue out for our flower collages, we used the rest of our hour together creating a bird collage. This was a quick, easy project inspired by Lois Elhert’s illustrations in Pie in the Sky. I did provide templates for those that wanted to use them, […]
Flower Collage
This week we took our drawings and painted papers from last week to create a flower collage. The idea was to add little bits of color just to enhance the delicate line drawings. Cutting the right shapes was a great exercise for both observation and hand eye coordination skills. Students decided what colors to use, […]
Happy Birthday, President Lincoln!
Today is President Lincoln’s birthday. So this week we have been creating Lincoln inspired projects. We began by reading Abe Lincoln’s Dream by Lane Smith. In this story, a little girl leads Abe Lincoln’s ghost on a tour, showing him how things have changed since he was alive. Along the way, they share a few […]
Winter Collages!
This week almost everyone completed their winter collages. This has been a great project. Each mini lesson provided learning opportunities and a lot of fun. I loved seeing it all come together. Students had to make decisions on the placement of the elements of the their landscapes. Some added extra details and created a story […]
Coloring Forest Animals
This week we finished drawing and began to color our forest animals. We talked about layering colors and varying pressure to achieve rich colors with colored pencils. These are really turning out great! I can wait to see our winter collage come together next week. For those that finished early, we learned how to cut […]
Painted Paper
After a long winter break, we are back to work at Corbie Arts. Our first project is actually going to be several “mini lessons” that will culminate in a winter collage. We began by reading Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner, illlustrated by Christopher Silas Neal. In this book, we follow a young girl […]
Foxes in a Snowy Forest
I love these foxes the K-2nd grade classes did over the past two weeks. I can see the cool shadows and the warm light on the snow outside my window right now. This project really captured that winter light. The foxes are adorable. One student decided to do a wolf. In this project, students learned […]
Finished Collages
Most of the students finished their collages this week. The really got to individualize their pieces this week. Many came up with great stories to go with their pictures. First we finished the hands and feet together, then they were free to use any colors they wanted. Some students really loved adding the detail. I […]
