Our last class of the World Traveler workshop took us to Tanzania. We read The Watcher by Jeanette Winter. This book tells the story of Jane Goodall’s childhood and her life spent living with and studying chimpanzees. Next we drew and painted a chimpanzee in a tree. We drew with a large black crayon and […]

Elephants from India
Day two of the “World Traveler” workshop was all about India. We started by reading Elephant Dance, Memories of India by Theresa Heine. We then drew a large elephant on watercolor paper and decorated our elephants using oil pastels. We finished these by painting them in liquid watercolor. Fun project with lots of variety!
Llama Love
Our World Traveler workshop started this week with a visit to Peru. First, we read Up and Down the Andes by Laurie Krebs and Aurelia Fronty. We learned a little bit about Peru and the famous textiles produced by Peruvians. We talked about line and pattern, and then created our own patterns in oil pastel. […]
Woven Fish
I added this project at the last minute and am so glad I did. It really was fun. We first created a weaving frame by folding a piece of colored paper in half and cutting slits along the folded edge. Students then chose painted paper strips to weave into the frame. Weaving was new for […]
Jelly Fish Day
Our second day of Underwater Adventures was jelly fish day. Our 2-D project was a mixed media painting. We started with a gradient background in either blue-ish or pink-ish tempera paint. Our goal was to learn how to blend smoothly, moving from one color to the next without a hard line. While our backgrounds were […]
Rainforest Collages Complete!
Yeah! We finished our rainforest collages this week! I love the richness of color and detail. Everyone worked so hard on these and should be very proud of the finished works. I would love to see them all hung together. They each seem to tell a different story of adventure in the jungle. : )
Lucy’s Birthday Party
We had so much fun doing a horse themed art party for Lucy’s birthday today. The girls did such a great job, and each created their own unique horses with such personality. Wonderful work, ladies!
Rain Forest Animals
This week we focused on drawing the animals for our rain forest collage. They turned out so great! I created a worksheet to help them draw some of the animals. Some students went a step further, drawing animals and even natives from their imaginations. Can’t wait to see these in their collages next week.
Completed Symmetrical Insects
The older class completed their symmetrical insects this week. I missed getting pictures of several of them. : ( They all turned out great. Most kids in this age group really love details. This project gave them lots of opportunity to draw details! They came up with some very good looking specimens.
Fabulous Frogs
This week students created these fabulous frogs with chalk pastel. I recently found a beautiful frog calendar and knew it would make a great art project. The frogs had such great shapes and colors. I also wanted to give students an opportunity to draw from a photograph. I laminated the photographs in the calendar so […]
