After learning about Wassily Kandinsky, we drew musical instruments both from photographs and some from imagination. Students were encouraged to draw the instruments large, keeping the arrangement of their composition in mind. We then added color with oil pastels. We discussed limiting our color palettes and repeating colors to unify our pieces. In the last […]

Mr Tiger Portraits
For our last class of the session, my K-2nd grade students painted Mr. Tiger portraits. We started out by reading Mr Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown. Then we cut out Mr. Tiger’s suit and glued it down. Using Peter Brown’s illustrations for inspiration, we drew the tiger’s head and facial features. We talked about […]
Kandinsky Circles
This week, students learned about Wassily Kandinsky, Russian artist known for his vibrant abstract paintings. We read the book The Noisy Paint Box by Barb Rosenstock. This book tells about Kandisnsky’s childhood and explains synesthesia. Kandisnky was thought to have synesthesia. He heard sounds when he saw colors and saw colors when he heard sounds. […]
Klimt Ladies (6th and up)
My 6th grade and up class has been working on portraits in the style of Klimt. They drew these in pencil, painted them in watercolor, and then added gold tempera paint and Sharpie marker. I love the effect of layering gold over the watercolor. Several students are still working on their portraits. Hopefully, I will […]
Monet’s Garden (K-2nd grade)
This week we have been learning about Impressionist artist, Claude Monet. These were done by my K-2nd grade group. They were so enthusiastic about this project and loved the results they could get from chalk pastel. I love that they learned about Impressionism, chalk pastel, and perspective while having a great time. Who wouldn’t want […]
Klimt Ladies
For the last couple of weeks, we have been learning about Gustav Klimt, the Viennese artist famous for his Art Nouveau paintings of women. Klimt used lots of pattern and lots of gold in his paintings. We began this project by reading Klimt and his Cat. Then we drew our ladies on colored paper. We […]
Klimt Cats
We had a great time today in the Wednesday K-2 class creating these patterned cats inspired by Gustav Klimt. We began by reading Klimt and His Cat by Berenice Capalti. This story is told from the perspective of Kilimt’s cat, Katze. We drew the cats together on black paper with white oil pastel. Staring with […]
More Snowy Owls!
I love this group of owls! We started painting realistic snowy owls last week. However, this week, I shared pictures of exotic owls with bright colors. I let them choose whether to complete their owls in realistic colors or let the exotic owl inspire bright colors. I love all the variety!
Contour Shoe Drawings
I has been awhile since my 6th grade and up class did any drawing from life. I decided to have them work on contour drawings of shoes. We warmed up by doing blind contour drawings. This is when you draw an object while looking at the object the whole time and never looking at your […]
K-2 Snowy Owls
Oh my goodness! These snowy owls are so cute! This was a really challenging project for my K-2 group. We did the snowy background first and then painted the owls on the still wet papers. Some followed me doing a directed drawing on the white board, and a few brave souls drew from photographs. Because […]
