On our first day of the “Modern Masters” workshop, we learned about Diego Rivera. We started out by reading Mike Venezia’s book about Rivera. I love his series, “Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists!” He throws in enough humor with just the right amount of factual information to keep the kids listening. : ) […]

Bryce Canyon Hoodoos
The kids blew me away with the last project of “Art, American Style.” We drew hoodoos from Bryce Canyon. Hoodoos are spire like rock formations. We drew them in black oil pastel and colored them with chalk pastels. We talked about layering colors and blending. These are absolutely stunning! If I didn’t see it with […]
Navajo Mini Rugs
Navajo indians are famous for their woven rugs. This project was just perfect after our cowboy outlaws. We used burlap and yard to sew a pattern. This was the first sewing experience for most of my students. They caught on fast. We then glued our mini rugs on colored paper. The next day, we created […]
Outlaw Posters
For day two of “Art, American Style,” we headed south and back in time. We drew and painted outlaws, aged our paper with liquid watercolor, and created “Wanted” posters. I had the “Wanted” sign pre-printed and aged to save time. I love how these turned out. What fabulous characters. Some students told me they went […]
Lady Liberty
For the first day of “Art, American Style,” we drew and painted the Statue of Liberty. We drew with Sharpie markers and painted with watercolor. This was a challenge to draw, but everyone did such a great job. I gave them the freedom to do the background how ever they wanted. We also read “The […]
Bee Prints
The last project for “Crawl, Wiggle, Fly” was a bee print. We first traced a hexagon template to make a honeycomb background. Then we painted the background using pan watercolor. We used foam sheets and sticky foam sheets to create the bee printing plates. I provided templates for the body parts for those that wanted […]
Butterfly Collages
Today in “Crawl, Wiggle, Fly,” we made butterfly collages. Yesterday, we made some painted paper in warm and cool colors. We used those papers today to create beautiful butterflies. Thanks to Patty at Deep Space Sparkle for the inspiration. : )
Spiders!!!
Today we completed our paper mache spiders. They are so awesome!!! We painted them in gesso first so that the newsprint wouldn’t show through. Then we used acrylic paint to complete them. I love these pictures of the artists with their spiders. Amazing work!
Imaginary Insects
After practicing drawing insects, we drew large imaginary insects on big paper. They were encouraged to draw large, incorporate what they learned from their sketches and put their own twist on their bug. They drew with sharpie and painted with puck tempera paint. Some cut their bugs out and glued them on colored paper. Others […]
