I was so excited to start this class for older students. I am really looking forward to taking on more advanced projects. This elephant project was a great way to start. I really emphasized that I want them to draw what they see, not what they know is there. This is harder than you would […]

3rd-5th grade Charcoal Elephants
Starting in the 3rd-5th grade classes, I really try to work on drawing skills more. I like to do less directed drawing and more drawing from life or from photographs. My goal is for them to move away from drawing symbols and learn to draw what they see. I decided to jump right in this […]
Sneak Peek at Splat the Cat
I don’t usually don’t do a “back to school” project, but this Splat the Cat project was hard to resist. I have several new students in my K-2nd grade class, and I wanted to put their minds at ease with a funny book and a no fail project. We first read the book, Splat the […]
Underwater Adventures at Meadow Springs CC
Last week I taught the Underwater Adventures workshop at Meadow Springs Country Club. We had 16 students! We got all the projects done, and they turned out great. Unfortunately, I was too busy to take many pictures. Here are a few highlights…
Galimotos
Our last project in the World Traveler workshop came from Malawi. Children in Malawi create push toys called “Galimotos” from wire scraps. We first read the book Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams. This book tells the story of a little boy named Kondi who searches for scrap wire in his village and eventually builds […]
African Chimpanzees
Our last class of the World Traveler workshop took us to Tanzania. We read The Watcher by Jeanette Winter. This book tells the story of Jane Goodall’s childhood and her life spent living with and studying chimpanzees. Next we drew and painted a chimpanzee in a tree. We drew with a large black crayon and […]
Indian Twirling Puppets
After completing our Indian elephants in the World Traveler workshop, we did a quick Indian twirling puppet project. The main shapes were printed on card stock. I let students create whatever character they wanted with markers. We then assembled the puppets with brads and a straw. This was quick and easy. They all had fun […]
Elephants from India
Day two of the “World Traveler” workshop was all about India. We started by reading Elephant Dance, Memories of India by Theresa Heine. We then drew a large elephant on watercolor paper and decorated our elephants using oil pastels. We finished these by painting them in liquid watercolor. Fun project with lots of variety!
Kachina Dolls
The first 3-D project in the “World Traveler” workshop was a Kachina Doll. These dolls come from the Hopi indians of the southwest of the United States. They were originally carved from roots and decorated. These started out as a toilet paper roll, a piece of tin foil, and some paper mache. We primed ours, […]
Llama Love
Our World Traveler workshop started this week with a visit to Peru. First, we read Up and Down the Andes by Laurie Krebs and Aurelia Fronty. We learned a little bit about Peru and the famous textiles produced by Peruvians. We talked about line and pattern, and then created our own patterns in oil pastel. […]
