My 3rd – 5th grade classes did flower collages last week. I pre-painted white tissue with acrylic paint to made some really interesting papers to work with. I also brought in store bought colored tissue for variety. After a quick demo, I let them get to work, creating a floral composition of their own. Most […]

Color Wheel Flower Collages
Last week, all classes focused on collage. The youngest group created color wheel collages. We started out by looking at a color wheel and discussing primary and secondary colors and why colors have a special place on the color wheel. I passed out pre-painted tissue papers, and they cut these into petal shapes. They then […]
Painted Pears
I was recently given a huge box of beautiful pears. I brought a bag in to serve as a simple still life for those who finished their blue paintings early. This project taught both contour drawing from observation and adding shading and highlights. Students drew with black crayon, painted with tempera paint, and finally added […]
Picasso Blue Period Portraits (6th grade and up)
My oldest group took on a very challenging project for our Picasso Blue Period focus week. I did this project in Carla Sonheim’s “Y is for Yellow” class. I think it is a great project for learning about value and learning how to build up color in watercolor. We started by drawing from Picasso’s original […]
Picasso Blue Period Portraits (3rd-5th)
Our theme this week was Picasso’s Blue Period. For the 3rd-5th grade classes, we did blue portraits, exploring tints and shades of one blue color. I went over proportions of a face but let them decide who the portrait would be of, themselves or an invented character. They also got to decide the location of […]
Picasso Birds
This week, all my classes learned about Picasso and his blue period. In the two younger groups, we read Pigasso and Mootise by Nina Laden, which definitely got a few laughs. My K-2 group then drew birds with guided drawing. Their challenge was to mix a variety of colors using only blue, turquoise, green and white. […]
Portraits of Stravinsky Complete
My 6th grade and up class completed their Stravinsky portraits. I let them add color using a variety of water based materials (watercolor pencils, ink pencils, gel crayons, etc… I really think they turned out great. They each have such unique personalities.
Portrait of Igor Stravinsky by Picasso
I am having so much fun with my older class. I really want to help them take their drawing skills to the next level. I am incorporating exercises from Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. One exercise from the book is to copy Picasso’s portrait of Igor Stravinsky, upside down. […]
The Little Hippo
My 3rd-5th grade classes started a project this week based on the book, The Little Hippo by Anja Klauss and Geraldine Elshner. We learned about the turquoise colored earthenware hippos made by ancient Egyptians. The gorgeous illustrations of the book served as the inspiration for our drawings. We drew with oil pastel and then painted […]
Splat the Cat Complete
My K-2nd grade group finished their Spat the Cats this week. I love all the different scenarios they created for their cats. What creativity! Even though we used the same shapes and colors to make them, they each have their own personality. The google eyes were a big hit. : )
