I love these hot air balloons by my K-2 group! They put so much work into the details. They are so bright and vivid. These were drawn with black marker, colored with crayon (white oil pastel for the clouds), and painted with both pan and liquid watercolor. Our inspiration was a book about a boy […]

Still Life Paintings
These still life paintings by my 3rd-5th grade class are just stunning! What a great way to end the year. They all worked so hard on their observational skills, color mixing, and composition. I allowed them to use artistic license with color. I love their color choices and individual expression. These were drawn with vine […]
Hot Air Balloon Drawings
This week, my K-2nd grade classes are drawing hot air balloons. We first read “Sebastian and the Balloon” by Philip Stead. The balloon in this book is made of quilts, which was a great introduction to our project. After drawing a simple hot air balloon, we filled each section of our balloons with pattern. Next […]
Still Life Drawing
Wednesday’s 3rd-5th grade class did a still life drawing in class this week. We used vine charcoal to draw the contour of the shapes. We then began to add color with tempera paint. I encouraged them to draw what they saw, not what they knew was there. I was really impressed with the results. I […]
Summer Art Workshops
The Summer Art Workshop schedule is finally ready! I am so excited about all the projects lined up for this summer. We will be offering four themes this year, all in the month of July. Workshop descriptions and dates are on the attached flyer as well as on the “Summer Workshop” section of the website. […]
Art Birthday Party
We had a great time last Saturday doing a Gelli plate printing birthday party. The birthday girl was turning 9, and she had 9 of her friends celebrating with her. What a great group! They produced a large amount of work and ended up with some really nice pieces.
More Painted Owls
Excited to share more painted owls from the Thursday class. Most of them chose the same type of owl to draw, but they each turned out so unique. Beautiful work! The students were very enthusiastic about painting their owls. Maybe a little too enthusiastic. : )
Painted Owls
Wednesday’s K-2 group did just a great job finishing their painted owls! We used tempera paint. I encouraged them to explore different ways to make texture. One new technique they learned was to add texture by painting over a color with a contrasting color and using the end of their brush to carve though the […]
Dream Art Studio Paintings
My 3rd-5th grade group finished painting their dream art studios. A lot of creativity went into these, and the results are really fun to look at. This was a long, detailed project. And, as much as they enjoyed it, I think some lost steam toward the end. Students in this group beg for this type […]
Lovely Tissue Paper Flowers
What a busy day we had in the K-2nd class! We completed our tissue paper collages, adding a fine black line and Modge Podge. I challenged them to really take it slow on the line work and to not worry about staying on the lines. I was so impressed with their delicate line work. Well […]
